DescriptionIn conjuction with the Statistics Department, the Center for Statistical Consulting offers free statistical consulting service for researchers on campus (almost) annually by statistics graduate students enrolled in the statistical consulting course. Graduate student statisticians are paired with projects based on their interests and expertise. The client is expected to directly collaborate with the consultant(s) under the supervision of the course instructor. In lieu of monetary payment, clients are asked to bear with the learning process and to be flexible with the turnaround time for deliverables as the students are trainees in statistical consulting. Since graduate student statisticians receive a letter grade for the course, suitable projects are those where the majority of the work could be completed in a 5 week period. For example, the statistician should be able to learn the background material of the project, define the scientific goals, select the statistical methodologies to achieve the scientific goals, analyze the data to obtain results and relevant graphics, write a preliminary draft of a publishable manuscript, and present the major findings by the end of the quarter; the actual submission of the manuscript and response to reviewers could be done after the quarter. Another scenario might not involve data directly but where a substantial amount of statistical work is needed prior to data collection; this might take the form of a grant proposal. Sign upTo reserve a space for the free service offered in Fall 2013, please schedule an initial meeting with the course instructor, Vinh Nguyen, to determine whether your potential project is appropriate. Please mention "FREE CONSULTING - Fall 2013" in the project description field. |
